Improve Your Home With Home Automation

Trying to enhance the look and function of your home with new decorations can be a tough thing to do, whether you want to increase its value for resale, or you just want it to look and feel nicer.

Louie Santaguida has decades of experience under his belt when it comes to real estate development, and if you take inspiration from his works, you’ll realize that there are many ways for you to improve your home. One of the things that you can do is go for home automation.

IFTTT is a free web app that lets you create simple conditional commands, which allows you to trigger an ‘applet’ and then choose what happens right after. Many homeowners have taken advantage of this amazing service, which lets them automate their home appliances. Let’s take a look at some of the things that you can do with IFTTT, and similar online services designed to modernize your home.

1. Turn on the lights at night

When it starts to get dark, it’s routine for us to turn on the lights in our home. By using automated functions, you no longer have to spend 5 to 10 minutes walking around your home just to turn on all of the lights (especially useful if your home has many rooms). You can customize which lights turn on and on at what time, offering great flexibility. For example, if you have a home gym that you only use on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, then you can customize the automation to those days only.

2. Receive an SMS if an alarm triggers

You can use IFTTT to send you a text message when an alarm triggers in your home, which can be customized for each alarm so that you know which of them needs to be addressed. This is very useful if you don’t want to be late when there’s an emergency in your home; whether it’s a fire or break-in, you’ll be alerted instantly.

3. Switch an idle TV to something interesting

If you’re a sports fan, you’re going to love this feature. There are bound to be days when you’re just lounging around with nothing to do, when you’ve already surfed through your favorite TV channels but nothing good is on. By using a trigger for your TV, you’ll be able to get right into the action of different sporting events. There are many triggers available such as, ‘a basketball game where the scores are no more than 3 apart with 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter’, and ‘a hockey game between major rivals that just came on’.

4. Prioritize a timestamp when CCTV detects motion

Homeowners with security cameras in their home usually just skim through their recorded footage. By using a customized trigger, you’ll be able to know which minutes or hours had suspicious motion during them. You can use this to review the timestamps highlighted, and see if someone actually tried to break into your home. By improving the safety and security of your day-to-day life, home automation has the potential to become a highly positive part of contemporary life.
