THIS GRANDEUR AND GLORY IS AT OUR..THE US CITIZENS EXPENSE!!! All of this growth in Dubai started years back when The Bush, Cheney, Rove and Rumsfeld (actually it started with Ronald Reagan..he set up the whole crooked capitalism strategy, along with others) gang took OUR money, from OUR jobs, our retirement, using banking, wall street, and OIL as a front to GOUGE us so they can become million/billionaires.. They have RAPED America and her resources, jobs, and peoples, along with others in the world, and built these PALACES (or New Babylon) for themselves. It is all GREED!!! These guys ,whether American politicans (republicans most likely), or Sheiks of Oil countries robbing us; have built an EMPIRE for themselves!!! at OUR expense.. Where do you think all of the money has gone?? Here. Dubai.. Corporate Corrupt Capitalism has contributed,as has Wall Street, and Corrupt republicans... but WOE TO THEM.. It will be swept away one day..within an hour's time. -Revelations.

Dear Jess,
I am not an Emirati, just on of the expats living in Dubai. Thanks for giving a very realistic and clear view of Emirates and Dubai to our frineds in US and elsewhere. Last night I went to Dubai Dessert Rock Fest. and guess who playes....Motorhead, ArchEnemy, Opeth and others. Dubai is truly becoming an international city, even Megadeth's been to Dubai. The only down-side to Dubai right now is inflation and rising rents but with this financial crisis we are expecting correction. Long Live Dubai - Long Live UAE.

First of all, these photos are a little dated, Atlantis is finished and looks gorgeous, and the Marina has expanded quite a bit. Contrary to popular belief, you actually do see a lot of green and its quite nice! If you've ever been to Vegas, you know that you can do a lot so long as you have access to money and water.
As for the beaches, nope women are not restricted, you see bikinis and thongs, just like in the states. Nope you don't see topless women, but then again, in our "free" country you don't see topless women on the beaches either.
Dubai and the UAE for that matter is not only for the "rich" you can actually find pretty reasonable flights out here, ours were $1100 round-trip out of Dallas/Fort Worth, which is cheaper than flying to Australia or Asia.
You can find hotels for as little as $90 bucks (Holiday Inn Express) and the prices go up from there, and shopping is great!
There is something for everyone out here, and even the skiing in the Emerites mall is only $60 for the whole day and they provide you everything in the price except your gloves and headgear. Yes, everything, suit, skis, poles, boots, etc.
The Emerirate people are very nice and friendly people. They respect our religions and customs and just ask the same in return. You do find fast food and restaurants similar to the states, but you also find great Lebanese, Iranian, Italian, Indian, Asian, you name it, food. This truly is an international destination.
You may argue that is where the oil money goes, but their Sheiks who are in charge really look out for their people. They get great free medical, may go any college they want, and their government pays for it, and provide them countless other incentives.
The highways are much nicer than those we have in the states, and the infrastructure they have been building will support the increase of vehicles and pedestrians.
The only downside I see with the highways are all the speed/traffic cameras. The speed limit is set at a moderate 120kmh, but you may go up to 20 over without triggering the cameras, but if and when you do, the fines range from AED500 and up, so it can get hefty.
The air is not disgusting, it is actually pretty nice. It is not full of smog, you do get "dusty" days, after all, you are near a desert, but you also get nice clear days. There is an environmental push these days to make Dubai greener, so I am sure you will see big changes in their carbon footprint in the future, but it really is not any worse than we experienced in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. True, we got a lot more rain in Texas.
Come out here and experience the culture first hand. It truly is a great place to visit! I'm hoping my wife and I spend more than a couple of years here, we love it and are grateful that we have had the opportunity to move here.
I would recommend it to everyone, especially if you enjoying seeing new things. Unfortunately in the states, the media tends to fill us with a lot of negativity towards Muslims countries. They're just like us!

I am glad that Dubai is developing and would probably be the expensive city in the world, they are so many firsts, and the global credit crunch will only lead to more money pouring in to the emirates, after all whats the point in buying a home and being stuck with negative equity when getting a property in Dubai can make you a killing.
They are alot of haters on this forum.
they need a chill pill, Dubai rocks. I have a place in Dubai and have started to invest in Brazil as well.

Some fantastic shots of one the most exciting and vibrant places on the planet!
A lot of highly ill informed comments above.

Guys go apply for a Passport and open your minds. The World is changing and seems like you are not.
Heres a view of the US for you to consider. It's a disaster of gun crime, social injustice, obesity and corporate corruption, no one would mind if you could stop exporting it.
