Property Gallery and Description

Casa do Prior (which translates as The Knight's House or The Prior's House) offers the rare opportunity to own and live in a piece of Portuguese history. This historic townhouse was built in the 18th century and is located alongside the medieval walls in Monforte in the Northern Alentejo, an equally historic village renowned for its wealth of ancient architecture. Over the years the house has featured in numerous tourism pamphlets and is one of the most emblematic houses in the village because of the decorative plasterwork (known as trabalho de massa) on the front facade and in the hallway and stairway. This plasterwork is typical of the Baroque style and found on many churches and cathedrals in Portugal.

The house has three floors and currently has three large rooms on each floor (nine in total). A staircase gives access to the upper floors but there is also an outside terrace/balcony which provides access to the first floor. The house is built of stone making for thick, sound walls and all the interior floors are timber. The house is connected to mains water, electricity and sewage.

The house has been partially renovated by the current owners with all the major structural work having been completed, including the construction of a new roof. The owners have plans for the development of the house into three holiday rental apartments, which are available to the new owner if so wished. These plans provide for three separate apartments (one each on the ground floor, first floor and the second floor) each consisting of a living room, kitchen, two bedrooms and two en-suite bathrooms. Alternatively as there are currently nine rooms in the house there is the potential to create a good sized permanent home or holiday home. This work could either be completed by a builder or by an experienced DIY enthusiast.

The house has no land, making it the ideal holiday home, but has an outside terrace/balcony on the first floor and a covered terrace on the ground floor. There is off-road space for parking cars in front of the house.

The total floor area of the house is 234 m2 (excluding the 11m2 terrace/balcony). The property is for sale freehold with vacant possession upon completion and there is no upward chain.

Monforte is an ancient village renowned for its wealth of historic architecture and with many imposing and ornate buildings. It has banks, shops, schools (kindergarten and primary), a petrol station and plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants. Outdoor activities, such as walking, horse riding, bird watching and cycling, are also available both in the area and in the nearby Serra de São Mamede. There are also many more historical and cultural sites in the area and further afield, including the nearby remains of a Roman villa at Torre de Palma. Approximately 25 minute's drive away is Portalegre, the capital of the Alto Alentejo which has all the facilities of a larger town.

The emblematic Casa do Prior presents the opportunity to acquire a house which exudes history and has a unique character. To its new owner it offers huge potential to improve and add value and after renovations are complete should make a superb family home or holiday home, or provide if converted into holiday apartments a regular income from holiday renting.
