This weekend, the Turkish tourism capital of Antalya plays host to a meeting between government officials and nearly 200 representatives of Turkey’s tourism sector. Infrastructure, future trends, domestic tourism and publicity are the main discussion topics at the summit. According to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, just over 6 million tourists visited the most popular southern Mediterranean resort of Antalya in the first nine months of 2006 out of a total 22-23 million expected visitors to Turkey for 2006. Representing a 20.4 percent increase on 2004, Turkey hosted 21 million tourists in 2005 which generated some 18 billion USD in tourism revenues. Given that 1.2 million tourists visited Turkey in 1980, the number of tourists visiting Turkey has increased 15 fold in 25 years, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has reported. According to its study on future tourism growth, Turkey is expected to be the most attractive tourist destination in the next 10 years, and Turkey’s tourism will grow by 10.2 percent p.a. in this period.
As part of a tourism strategy which includes building a reputation for thermal and winter tourism, health tourism and continuing to boost Turkey’s already booming summer tourism with residential property development, high on Turkey’s tourism agenda is attracting a share of the lucrative golf vacation market which is has already made headway with the Turkish Golf Federation unveiling ambitious plans for no fewer than 100 new golf courses in Turkey within the next four years, turning Turkey into a real golfing hot spot.
Situated near the River Köprüçay enjoying breathtaking views of Antalya’s Mediterranean coastline, LykiaGolf is Turkey’s first links course, already under construction it is set to open in May this year and features an island green on the 7th hole.
Building a reputation as a premier golf destination, Turkey is placing strong emphasis on quality golf course resorts supported by Turkish golf news this month that the Belfry-based Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) has branded the Antalya Golf Club’s David Jones-designed championship course Turkey’s first PGA course. To be renamed the PGA Sultan, it is hoped this accolade with give Turkey’s booming golf economy another boost. PGA Property and Development Manager, Robert Maxfield, said: “The PGA is delighted to be associated with such a quality development in a country which is rapidly becoming one of the most popular golfing destinations in Europe.”
Colin Montgomerie is also playing his part in shaping the future of Turkish golf with the official launch of his latest design project The Montgomerie Course at Papillon Golf Club which forms part of a prestigious $100 million brand new golf and hotel complex complete with 9 hole short course, golf academy and up to 40 holiday villas. It is hoped that along with his legendary name Montgomerie will bring his vision, experience and personality to the new 18 championship hole golf course set within 104 hectares of mixed pine forest and ridges located in the Belek region of Turkey, near Antalya. On his first ever visit to Turkey last month to check on the progress of its construction, Colin said “I am delighted to be associated with the Papillon Hotels golf course at Antalya and designing what we hope will be yet another great tournament venue.” Design work has already begun with construction due to commence later this year, the course will be completed at the end of 2007.
Golf courses within close proximity to beach resorts double up as a great place to come for a holiday and the popular holiday home resorts of Altinkum and Akbuk on Turkey’s Aegean coast.
