In a bid to expand Portugal’s tourism experience, Spa Tourism has been placed top the agenda by The Portuguese National Tourism Office (PNTO) with extensive renovation planned for a number of historic spas in Portugal.

In additional to its traditional reputation as home of beach holiday hotspots and golf resorts, Portugal is hoping to add ‘spa destination’ to its travel repertoire. In the face of global competition for tourism dollars, by refurbishing historic spa resorts throughout Portugal, the hope is that it will encourage visitors to visit new rural municipalities such as Luso and Curia in Portugal’s Centro region between Lisbon and Porto. These historic spa’s such as Monfortinho, on the border with Spain in Portugal’s Idanha-a-Nova municipality offer proximity to no less than two natural parks.

The Portuguese National Tourism Office (PNTO) hopes to raise tourism awareness of Portugal’s spa water potential which have been used for relaxing, healing and therapeutic purposes since the Roman times. It is hoped that Portuguese spa goers will not only benefit from the latest spa treatments in newly upgraded spa facilities complimented by the picturesque natural settings of these Portuguese Spa towns but will help to open up new tourism hotspots within Portugal.

  1. This will open up some other areas for property development which is always good as many of the area’s in Portugal are over developed. Makes a change from golf property too.
