How To Travel

Sardinia has three airports – Olbia on the northeast coast, Alghero on the northwest and Cagliari in the south. Flights from the UK take around two-and-a-half hours.

Trains on Sardinia connect the whole island but are notoriously slow. Many tourists catch the trenino verde, which runs through the wildest parts of the island, offering stunning scenic views that are impossible to witness from the main road.

The train connects Cagliari to Arbatax in the south and Sassari to Palau in the north. It is highly recommended to make the trip from Macomer to Bosa Marina, where the train winds its way through the typical Sardinian landscape to reach the sea near the coastal town of Bosa situated in the west of the island.

Cala Pira (Southeast)

The beach of Cala Pira is a small inlet covered with Mediterranean plants, set in among one of the most beautiful coastlines in Sardinia. Its surface is sprinkled with fine, white sand with a pinkish hue.

The recently restored Torre di Cala Pira rises up on the north-eastern side of the bay, surrounded by dunes, granite rock and junipers. The crystal clear water and natural surroundings offered by the Island of Serpenara, make the bay even more inviting.

Spiaggia della Pelosa (Northwest)

Guarded by a Spanish watchtower, Spiaggia della Pelosa is about an hour’s drive from Alghero up to the north-west coast. It’s a dreamy crescent of flour-fine white sand and sparkling emerald water.

Be prepared, as this extremely popular beach gets packed, so best to arrive early and claim your spot, before the sun-worshipers saunter in.

Spiaggia del Principe (Northeast)

Spiaggia del Principe is a popular beach due to its intense blue waters and unusually calm conditions.

Strut this beach like a prince though, as it translates as – ‘Prince‘s Beach,’ supposedly named after Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, who dropped anchor here in the 60’s and turned it into one of the most elite resorts in the Mediterranean.

And although you might not kick sand in the face of actual royalty, you could just breeze past some celebrities and their entourage.

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, situated to the west of mainland Italy.

Surrounded by the French island of Corsica, the Italian Peninsula, Tunisia and the Spanish Balearic Islands, Sardinia is solely Italian, granted a special statute of regional autonomy under the Italian Constitution.

Equidistant between the Italian and North African main-lands, this idyllic island was once described by DH Lawrence as ‘lost between Europe and Africa and belonging to nowhere.’

Sardinia is a very ancient island, rich in history and legends, with traces of human settlements going back to the Neolithic Age.

Inhabited for many thousands of years, human remains were discovered on the island in 1979 that dated back to 150,000 BC. In 2004, in a cave in Logudoro, a human phalanx was found that was dated to roughly 250,000 BC.

In more recent years, Sardinia has become a popular tourist destination, particularly for those looking to escape from the common touch. During the high season the island turns into the headquarters of the rich and famous and their parasitical paparazzi, especially on the Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast).

Sardinia is renowned for its exquisite cuisine, splendid wines and friendly locals and everywhere you go in the Med’s answer to the Caribbean, a thick mantle of aromatic herbs, ‘macchia’ (Mediterranean maquis), covers the land and perfumes the air.

    Sardinian hard (wild) landscape is characterized by mountain chains, massifs, tablelands (plateau), Campidano plain and by rivers. Some artificial lakes and numerous ponds, soften Sardinian view. Sardinian coasts are full of beaches, mortises and cliffs which are lapped by the blue water of Sardinian sea. Many caves show their treasures of stalactites and stalagmites to the visitors. Mediterranean scrub, oleasters and ficodindia prevail in Sardinian landscape.

    If you decide to buy a property in Sardinia, you have to know the documents you need to move and settle down. There’s a distinction between EU citizens and Non-EU citizens.
    EU citizens Thanks to the Schengen Agreement, inside the European borders there are no more customs. Infact, European citizens can travel within the European Community without any restriction. You just need a passport or an ID card and you’ll be able to go wherever you want.
    Non EU citizens If you need to stay in Italy for less that 3 months as a tourist, the following is all you need: you have to posses a valid travel document such as a passport (or a Visa if it is required for your country of origin), you have to be able to demonstrate the purpose of your travel and that you have enough means of subsistence to stay and to return. It’s implied that you must not be listed on Schengen information system as a threat to national security or as a refusing entry.
    If you need to stay in Italy (or in any other EU country) for more than three months, there are some steps you must complete. In your home country you have to contact your local Italian Consulate to obtain the Visa. Then, once in Italy, you have to register at your local “Questura” (police office) to get the “Permission to stay”. There are five main acceptable reasons to get a Visa, and they are for: work, studies, religious purposes, residence, family motive. If you move for Residency to Italy, you will need these documents: copy of acquisition or rental contract, proof of bank statement in Italy, passport, social security code. When you get the permit to stay, you have to go to any local office of the Ministry of Finance to apply for your tax identification number (you can use it to sign up for the National Health Service, to set up you own business, to work as an employee, etc).
    For your car, be sure to have the insurance inside (the police will ask for it every time) and the car tax (you can get it in any ACI office, they’re everywhere in Italy).

    It lies about 2km from the town of Arzachena, 4 km from the emerald green Sea of Costa Smeralda and 18 km from the Olbia Airport.
